about the academies
Career academies at Islip High School have been developed with the purpose to provide focused academic studies to ready students for both college and/or their careers. One of the most important reasons to join an academy is that students will be taking courses with other students of similar interests and have a desire to learn about a potential career path. Teachers teaching the courses in the academy will also bring their own expertise in the career field, engaging students to become excited about their areas of interest.
Students enrolled in the academy receive a special distinction on their transcripts and will also be acknowledged of completing the course of study at their high school graduation. Students enrolled in a rigorous full four years of study in high school will be more college and/or career ready since they have been exposed to more focused coursework designed to help them better succeed in life.

Test-Drive a career
Students enrolled in academies will be able to “test-drive” a potential career path without significant consequences as the students will still be enrolled in the necessary courses for graduation; however, students may discover through their participation in the academy a new career field that was previously unknown to them, or they may also discover that the careers associated with the academy are not suited for them. This could all happen before the students enter college and come to this realization after multiple semester bills have been paid.

credit options
In addition, many of the courses affiliated with the academies are AP or honors-weighted Dual-College Credit courses. This will allow students to save significant time and money after they leave Islip High School if the credits transfer to their college or university. The Business Academy is affiliated with Farmingdale State College, where students earn up to 24 transferrable college credits before graduation! The Advanced Research Program in the STEM Academy offers students the opportunity to potentially be awarded the AP Capstone Diploma if students earn a 3 or higher on AP Seminar, AP Research, and four other AP courses.

focused experiences
As members of an academy, students have the ability to participate in special events and activities that provide increased awareness to and opportunities within the specific careers in their chosen field. For example, students in the Business Academy may participate in a job shadowing opportunity so that they are able to witness first-hand the daily operations of a local business.
